I was born in Norwich in 1991 and have lived in Norfolk for 18 years. From an early age I have always taken a keen interest in current affairs along with why and how our society is affected by different events on our own shores, but also across the world. Having grown up throughout a developing time in politics it’s no wonder how it has become a true passion in my life. The way the economies of the world work has been an interest of mine for some time and through my own work, I have a realistic idea of how businesses can run in the busy and confusing 21st Century. While studying at Diss High School, I created my own ‘business’ at the age of 13 – sole trading in graphic and web design. Gaining work through word-of-mouth, the business became my primary investment outside of studying and it still continues 5 years later.
My second business, focusing on production and engineering – Prostar Live Entertainment – became a principal sponsor and the production directors for ‘Park In The Park 2006′ in Diss. Prostar also oversaw the creation of the event branding and promotion across the town. Further work, together with Diss Town Council saw me becoming involved with the Cittaslow Movement, promoting the town and helping support the network behind making Diss the third UK town to join the movement. I became Head Boy & Prefect at Diss High in 2007, and was made a Young Honoured Citizen of the town later that year for services to the community – including being Chairman for youth music project ‘SNSounds Live’ throughout 2003/04, supporting young people in the South Norfolk area. Between 2006 and 2010, Prostar Live Entertainment has produced and engineered for 14 musicals, 12 pantomimes and over 50 live music and conference events across the county of Norfolk.
For the 2008 relaunch of the Diss Carnival, which had been absent from the town for 10 years, I sat on the organising committee – becoming Entertainments Director for the event. The Diss Carnival returned to the town once again in 2009, and I was on the organising committee for a second time. In 2009 over 5,000 visited the Diss Carnival fun day. In 2010 the Carnival is set to return for a 3rd year, thanks to huge commitment and support from the local community. My dedication to drama and music has always been part of my life and I have played piano/keyboards since I was 7 and have been involved in many bands and groups as a pianist and vocalist. As an actor, I have been in a number of plays and musicals. Between 2007 and 2008, I was Musical Director for Pulham Players and during 2008 also worked as Musical Director for Old Buckenham Players.
Politics for me is being able to learn from the past, while exploring issues that concern all of us, and building on these for a stronger future. It is vital that young people have a say in politics and can begin to learn about, and be involved in, the political process from a younger age. My real passion is making sure that the next generation of people grow up believing in strong democratic principles and the that politicians themselves; can help them, have helped them and will continue to deliver the best services and policies on their behalf. This is why I want to be involved in the political process. We have to make sure that our law and governance are up to date with what people need. I am an activist and organiser for the Labour Party and a former treasurer for Norfolk Young Labour. At a time when the commitment we need to politics from young people couldn’t be stronger I was part of the team, together with the Town Council, that created a Youth Council for my local town of Diss. I became a Youth Councillor and was elected as Chair of the Council for 2009-2010.
I now study Politics, Philosophy and Economics at the University of Hull and continue to campaign for Labour in Hull and in Norfolk. During March 2010, as a first year at Hull University, I was elected as Chair of Campaigns & Democracy for 2010-2011, a part-time officer position at Hull University Union (HUU) and delegate for NUS National Conference 2010.
